The Nar Phu Valley trek is a trek to the remote villages of Nar and Phu situated in northeast valley near Chame, Annapurna. It is one of Nepal's most untouched and beautiful regions in Annapurna. The valley is entirely culturally Tibetan, and the lifestyle and landscape resembles that of Tibet.
Nar Phu Valley is considered as a hidden gem that offers trekkers a rare opportunity to explore the exquisite and discreet parts of Nepal. This trek is a combination of visiting remote villages, views of magnificent snow capped ,mountains, yaks, narrow gorges, canyons beautiful forest, glacier, high pass of Kang la 5200m, along with visit to the sparkling Tilicho lake, the highest altitude lake in the world located in manang district and visit natural hot springs to tatopani. Nar Phu Valley trek starts from Jagat following the popular trekking routes of Annapurna Circuit trail and then branch off from koto to follow the off beaten track to Nar Phu Valley in the north of Manang and pass the Kang La pass with magnificent panorama of Annapurna Massifs.
The Kang La pass links Nar with Manang and three other Mongol villages in the Neyshang Valley. The entire trek can be a tough experience. The rising altitude and crossing the two high passes ca still prove difficult for most of the seasoned trekkers.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m/4428ft)
Today starting day of our trip, we send our organization agents to pick you up at Tribhuwan International Airport. You will be heartily welcomed with greetings and shifted towards tourist standard hotel. We additionally plan for meeting at our office for a discussion about upcoming trek.
Day 02: Kathmandu: sightseeing and trek preparation
We tour world heritage sites which hold vast cultural, religious and historical for Nepalese people. The amazing sites include Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, the famous 'monkey Temple'(Swayambhunath) and Bouddhanath. At the end of the day, your guide will be briefing you about your further journey and necessary equipment to pack.
Day 3: Kathmandu to Jagat Drive (1100m/3608ft):8-9 hours
We begin our journey at early dawn as we have a long drive ahead of us. We head-start right after breakfast and leave Kathmandu around 7 am in the morning. We see picturesque views of Nepali countryside, lush greeneries, rivers, villages, farms and mountain vistas en route throughout the drive. After 8-10 hours of drive we reach Jagat via Besishahar. Drive up to Besishahar will most likely be smooth owing to black-topped roads whereas after Besishahar, the roads get dusty and coarse but the scenic view from our windowpane is more than compensating for the bumpy ride. Overnight in Jagat.
Day 4: Jagat to Dharapani (1960m/6430ft): 7-8 hours
In the morning after breakfast, the trail goes gradually uphill to Chamje and cross another suspension bridge and follow the steep rocky trail until reaching Tal village. You can see again very beautiful waterfalls in Tal. We continue straight and cross the suspension bridge near Lower Dharapani. You continue a little more hiking and arrive in Higher Dharapani. Overnight in Dharapani.
Day 5: Dharapani to Koto (2,610m/8563ft): 5-6 hours
Today we will enter Nar Phu Valley which will take us around five to six hours. We will trek through pine and fir forests, monasteries and villages to Bargarchhap. You can enjoy the spectacular mountain views of Annapurna II and Manaslu and other peaks along the way. Trail continues through pine forests till Latamarang which takes about one and half hour .Finally we will reach Koto, a small village inhabited by Gurung communities. Overnight in Koto.
Day 6: Koto to Meta (3,560m/11,680ft):7-8 hours
After registering your restricted area permit at the Police Check Post, we will start trekking alongside the Soti Khola until Dharmasala. we will continue the trek through forests and ascend steeply towards Meta village. Finally we arrive on the Tibetan Plateau where we have a very good view of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. Overnight in Meta.
Day 7: Meta to Phu Gaon (4,250m/13,944ft): 7-8 hours
We will start your day hiking up and down, and crossing suspension bridges over different streams. After 4 hours of trek, you will reach Kyang where we can see the remnants, particularly the ruined forts of the Khampa settlement (the place which Khampa refugees from Tibet once captured and lived). After walking past the Phu Khola on a rocky trail we will reach the Phu village. Overnight in Phu Gaon.
Day 8: Acclimatization at Phu Gaon
Today is the scheduled acclimatization day whereby we are suggested to rest and get acclimatized with the altitude. As we are in the Lost/Hidden Valley, we can explore the culture, natural diversity, and religious practices of the ethnic groups like Lama, Gurung and Ghale in here. It is also the day for us to explore the Tashi Lakhang Monastery – the old Buddhist Monastery listed out of the 108 world’s great Buddhist Monasteries; it is supposed to be the last monastery constructed by Karmapa Rinpoche. Overnight at Phu Gaon.
Day 9: Phu Gaon to Nar (4,110m/13,484ft): 6-7 hours
The trek starts with a descend. We will reach Mahendra Pul after 4 hours. After passing through the high suspension bridge (80m over the Gorge of Lapche River), we can rest and have lunch. The trail afterwards ascends until Nar Village. We find several Buddhist Monasteries here to visit coupled with the glorious vistas of Pisang Peak and other small peaks. Overnight in Nar.
Day 10: Acclimatization and preparation at Nar
This is the second scheduled acclimatization/rest day for this trek. We spend the day taking a day hike nearby and explore Nar village and have a close look over the local culture and lifestyle. We also prepare for the trek next day. Overnight in Nar.
Day 11: Nar to Kang La Pass (5,332m/17,460ft) to Ngwal (3660m/12,008ft): 7-8 hours
Today is adventurous day with long day hike so we get up early in the morning and head to Kangla pass. From pass we can see the Annapurna massif. We further trek down to Ngwal from there. Overnight in Ngwal.
Day 12: Ngwal to Manang (3,540m/11,614ft): 4-5 hours
From Ngwal, we head for Manang today. We pass through the isolated village of Paugh overlooking the amazing views of Annapurna range. We then move gently uphill to Mungli and then to the main trail of Annapurna Trail at Mungli. We eventually reach Manang, where we set up our camps for overnight stay. Overnight in Manang.
Day 13: Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft): 3-4 hours
From Manang we cross a stream and climb up to Tenki village then head out of Marshyangdi valley northwest up Jar Sang khola valley .the trail ascends slowly as we head northward. We will pass a few pastures and juniper trees. Following the trail we will pass though a small village called Ghunsa with houses made of flat mud roof and then pass pastures with yaks and horses. After crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, we make our way up the spectacular valley to an open, peaceful meadow known as Yak Kharka. Overnight at Yak Kharka.
Day 14: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4600m/15,092ft): 3-4 hours
Today we head to the foot of Thorong la pass, Throng Phedi. We climb up to a ridge then head down and cross the Marshyangdi River on a wooden bridge. After a climbing the mountain path we follow a narrow trail across a slope and descend to Thorong Phedi .Overnight at Thorong Phedi.
Day 15: Thorong Phedi to Thorong La (5,416m/17764ft) to Muktinath (3,800m/12,467ft): 7-8 hours
The early morning trek is required to assault the Throng La Pass, as it is the toughest leg of the trail. The trail goes steeply upwards to the High Camp. With brief stops in between, we will reach to the top of Thorang La pass, which is the highest point of the trek. We can spend some time here and start descending the other way towards the Muktinath. Overnight at Muktinath.
Day 16: Muktinath to Jomsom (2,715m/8910ft):5-6 hours
We begin descending down the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge through the arid land. We pass by Jharkot and Khingar villages which has typical Tibetan architecture. Following the valley floor most of the way sprawled along the banks of the Kali Gandaki, we reach Jomsom. Overnight in Jomsom.
Day 17: Jomsom to Pokhara Flight (827m/2,700ft): 30 min flight
After breakfast we fly to Pokhara. The scenic flight takes us through the gorge of the two huge mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara airport, we will be transferred to lakeside hotel. We get some rest and explore the beauty of Pokhara Valley in the evening. While we leisurely walk along the bank of Fewa Lake, the second biggest lake of Nepal while admiring the mountain view of Machhapuchhare. We can also go for a boat-ride in Fewa Lake or take a short hike to the World Peace Pagoda. We can end the day with a leisurely stroll around the mesmerizing lakeside area. Overnight in Pokhara.
Day 18: Pokhara to Kathmandu
Today, after breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu. After reaching Kathmandu, we will be transferred to our hotel. There is nothing to do but trade emails with travel companions and organize our photos. We can spend the evening leisurely or perhaps catch up on some last minute shopping. Either way, we celebrate the successful completion of our journey with a farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight at Kathmandu.
Day 19: Final departure from Nepal
We drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport and bid you warm farewell.
We will be staying at 3 Star Standard hotels which have deluxe suite in Kathmandu for 2 nights and the best available teahouses during the trek. All accommodations are on twin-shared basis. Single supplement will be served on request and will cost an additional USD 300.
All meals will be provided during trekking while only breakfast will be available in Kathmandu. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners for guests. While on the short trek, we have breakfast and dinner in the tea-houses/lodges we spend the night and lunch on our way to the next destination. The teahouse menu includes Nepalese, Tibetan and the more common continental cuisines for us to choose from.
This trek’s itinerary is planned with a high degree of awareness of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Experts agree that gaining elevation without proper consideration of AMS could be fatal. The higher the altitude, the less oxygen will be in the air. Therefore, our body needs time to adapt to an environment with less oxygen. During this trip, we take rest in Nar and Phu Gaon, which will help us acclimatize to the high altitude thus resulting in a successful trip.
For this trek, there will be one leader, assistant leader (5 trekkers: 1 assistant guide) and porters for luggage carrying (2 trekkers: 1 porter). This arrangement ensures that even if anybody in the group gets sick or is unable to carry on, the trip can still go ahead as planned for the rest of the group. We can run the trek for groups of any size, but usually, it is a maximum of twelve people as we've found this to be the best size for a successful trip. If you would like to make a group booking for more than twelve people together, we can arrange this too.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements
This is a moderate trek. Travelers who can walk up to 6-7 hours a day on an uphill and downhill trail will find this trek fulfilling. It is best that we prepare ourselves for this trek by jogging and exercising regularly at least a month prior to the start of the trek. Trekking to the trek will be relatively easier for those who have experience walking/trekking in a high altitude environment. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Messenger Travel & Tours before booking the trek.
Best Time to Travel
The best time for the Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. The temperature is moderate in these seasons and guarantees amazing views through the trip. Although this trek can be undertaken during winter, the cold temperature might not be suitable for everyone.
